My server finally ships

Much to my delight today, when I went to check on my Dell order for a new server, I realized that it had shipped this morning and was on it's way to the carrier. Who knows how long it will take to get to my house, and if UPS or Fed-Ex will even leave it there at the door the first day, or if I'll have to play games with them just to get it dropped at my door, but it shipped.

I can't wait.

Another Dell delay

Last Thursday, I orderd a new server from Dell. I did my homework and found that the prebuilt Dell servers were the best bang for the buck, and aside from the issue with my hard drive shipping, I had never had any problems with them in the past. Well, they did the same thing to me again. According to the website and order confirmation, my new server was supposed to ship out today, and I should receive it Tuesday or Wednesday. I got an email from them this morning telling me that they are "experiencing an unexpected delay" with my order and that it will not ship until on or before 9/16. That's one week later than they told me it would ship! I am a bit pissed about this incident, but to have it happen twice in about a month with two seperate orders is really bad. They will be hearing from me when they ask me to fill out their customer satisfaction survey.

Unfortunately, it's not really like I can cancel the order and buy it elsewhere, they were $500 cheaper than anywhere else. An amazing deal, but I have to deal with this crap now.

New look and feel

I've been meaning to do this for a long time, just never had the spare time (not that I have it now) and it never was high up on my priority list. I finally got a consistent look and feel to the blog. Granted, I stole it from Stacey, but it looks kewl now. I just need to clean it up since the colors are different (look really closely at the greys), and in general, make it a bit more "mine", but it's a good start.

New Server

It's been a long time since I've posted, but I have a new toy coming! Over the course of the past couple of weeks, lonestar (my mail and DNS server running on a 486) has been having it's share of problems. Crashing every few days and being just generally not happy. I have also been having issues with the other two servers that reside at my house. One only has a 2 Gb drive in it and that decided to fill up a week ago. The other server is only a PII 350 attempting to run J-Boss and PostgreSQL server serving out a custom e-commerce website for Tobacco Palace Inc..

I had spent a bit of my time over the past couple of weeks attempting to spec out a server and decide if I wanted to buy one or build one. With the price advantage not being all that great, I decided to just purchase one. By far, Dell had the best deals over Gateway and IBM. Gateway uses only the Celeron processors in their servers that I could find/afford, and the IBM's were double the price of the Dell.

I decided to purchase a Dell PowerEdge 1600SC with a Xeon 2.8GHz processor, 512MB PC 2100 ram, a 36GB SCSI hard drive and other neat toys for about $700. It should ship on Thursday, which means I should have it by Monday or Tuesday. Then it's fun time installing Gentoo on this box.

This will become my new server, consolidating the 3 servers I have strewn around the county into one. I will finally have a server worthy of the name, and only have to worry about paying the bills for the house, and not the computer sitting at my parents still.
