Last night, I went with a few friends from work to see the Serenity movie. I was impressed, satisfied, and disappointed all in the same movie. My thoughts on the movie are below. Beware, there may be some spoilers so don't read the details if you have not seen the movie.
The visual effects were amazing, so much better than what the TV show budget allowed for, the story was very well written and acted, as could be expected, and I was happy with the movie. My disapointment comes with Joss' need to walk a fine line with closing the series incase another movie was never made, and to leave enough open for another major plot line. My view of the entire story has three major plotlines, the mystery surrounding Shephard Book, River Tam, and the Reevers. All three of these stories are wrapped up in the movie, essentially closing the major plot lines. I realize why he had to do this, but had hoped he would leave at least one of them open. I'm sure he has plenty of other stories in his amazing mind for future movies, and only time will tell.
Dave had spoiled part of the movie for me by telling me that a major character dies in the movie, but he failed to mention that two will die. (He had read the book before seeing the movie). There was a point when you realized who the first one to die would be, but the second death was a total surprise, and happened very quickly. It did get to the point where I was worried that many others would end up being killed off near the end of the movie because things started to go poorly for our heros.
All in all, I enjoyed the movie, and will buy the DVD when it comes out. I thought it was well written, acted, and fit well into the 'verse. I look forward to a sequel.
