I finally got fed up with deleting comment spam and decided to install MT-Blacklist based on Stacey's advise. It went very smoothly, although I had to take the "not so short" approach since I am using PostgreSQL and this products isn't completely compatible with that DB and PERL module. Oh-well. Let me know via email if you have problems posting any comments.
Posted by doug at June 1, 2004 10:08 AMApparently posting comments is not effected. I got another spam comment yesterday, added it to my blacklist, and then let MT-Blacklist clean it out for me. Pretty slick :)
Posted by: doug at June 3, 2004 03:14 PMRemember that you have to update mt-blacklist from the master list in order to be proactive. And it WILL stop spam comments from being posted if it matches one of the regular expressions.
Of course, I haven't seen a spam comment or even had mt-blacklist block any comment since I renamed the comment script. That seems to be the best method so far.
Posted by: stacey at June 4, 2004 08:46 AMWhen I said posting comments was not effected, I meant good comments. I wanted to know if legit people could still post comments. I have seen a few comments get blocked in my logs now. BTW, how often do you update you master list? And does it overwrite or just append, keeping your custom entries?
Posted by: doug at June 4, 2004 09:36 AMI've never made any changes to mine, so I just grab the master list every week or so (or when I remember). It will list out the entries that are duplicates and the new entries, but I dont know how it deals with entries that are in your list but not the master.
Copy out your changes and give it a shot! ;)
