I just spent the last 10 minutes cleaning up the comment spam on my blog! When I started, I had 120 comments, I now have 102! As if spam email isn't frustrating enough, now I have to watch my comments and delete them! I also need to carefully watch the baby website because I definately don't want the kinds of spam comments on there that I've been getting here.
I did block the 2 IP addresses the movable type reported them coming from, so we'll see if that helps at all.
Posted by doug at March 15, 2004 12:00 PMask google (or stacey) about methods to block comment spam in mt. i've seen various tips, some of which include changing field names or the actual name of the mt-comment.cgi or whatever it is. that way it doesn't work like every other predictable mt install.
Posted by: john at March 15, 2004 03:17 PMI took a look at MovableType.org and found this link to an article about securing your MT site against spam. I guess I'll have to do that.
Posted by: doug at March 15, 2004 03:30 PMJust changing the name of the cgi file and switching from pop-up comments to archive page comments has worked wonders for me. No spam since, and it's kinda fun to see the spammers being 404'd in your web logs. :D
Posted by: stacey at March 16, 2004 10:01 AMGranted it's only been a day, but blacklisting those 2 IP addresses has seemed to work so far. I'll have to change the cgi file and kill the popups, but so far I'm pleased
Posted by: doug at March 16, 2004 10:09 AMYou can also install MT-Blacklist. I grabbed the newest version tonight, even though I havent had any spam for a while, and am going to see what kind of cool stuff it can do.
Posted by: stacey at March 16, 2004 10:31 PMI have now turned on the emailing of comments so I can watch them more closely.
