Well... I finaly started to install RedHat on that linux box I got at work for the new J2EE server. First impression I got was not a very good one. When it's booting up, It has a happy little Windows install look and feel to it. It even has that all through the install.. It uses X and a GUI to do the install.. Although you can choose to do a text only install but I wanted to see how pathetic it was since I've heard nothing but bad things about RedHat and how they have dumbed down the *nix OS and brought it the common computer idiot.
Another thing I don't like is their update process. You have to register you OS with RedHat and create an account. Upon doing this, your computer sends all kinds of information about itself and it's owner to RedHat and then, finally, you can do security updates that are 3 months old. For example, the newest kernel I was offered was 2.4.20.. 2.6 has been out for a while now!!!
Just my normal bitches about an inferiour OS.. much like winblows!!
Posted by doug at December 16, 2003 01:35 PMI haven't been offered a 2.6 kernel from my gentoo updates yet either. But if Redhat is going the way of the dinosaur as I have heard, getting any updates at all will prove to be difficult.
Posted by: stacey at December 16, 2003 02:55 PMi wouldn't just yet be jumping to use 2.6's on production machines. it's still in testing cycle, not even pre-release. it _is_ good fun, but not for production. debian has 2.6 packages i think, though. ;)
heh..you're so elitist...dumbing down *nix for common computer idiots.
redhat probably has its place somewhere. it's just not on my servers. hand the box over to your dba guy and make it his responsibility to keep the system up-to-date and functioning since it's his os.
Posted by: john at December 17, 2003 12:56 AMhand it over so it never get's updated huh? he is currently running two other oracle installs on red hat and they are wide open to attacks... they are still using telnet!!! why would i want to do that?
And your right.. Red Hat does have it's place... but definately not on any box I have control over.
And another thing that I love.. we were so worried about running an "approved OS" for oracle... turns out that Red Hat 8.0 is not "approved".. but that is what we are running.. :) go figure!! I get to rebuild the machine from scratch again in a couple of weeks when we get the enterprise server version of RH in. Lucky me!!
Posted by: doug at December 17, 2003 05:40 PMIf you hand it over to someone else, when it gets hacked you get to say "Not my problem". You don't know how great that is until you get to say it once. :D
